I agree with Emily and Melissa; the reason Kumola keeps thinking about Mpanza's son is that he feels as if he is loosing his own son, just as Mpanza lost hers. Also, Kumola keeps thinking about Mpanza's son because the story reflects some of his fears about Johannesberg, and how different city life is from the tribal life Kumalo is used to.
