Kumalo is in Johannesburg to help reunite his family. However his son is in trouble with the police. He is afraid that his son will have the same fate as Mpanza's.

Bring the family back together, bring back some of the past that has been forgotten and destroyed.

kumalo is preoccupied with mpanza's son's death and how he was hit by a bus in johannesberg. he is worried that the same has happened to his son, or that it will happen to him

Kumalo keeps thinking about Mpanza's son because he is worried that his family and tribe will never be reunited. Family is a very important value in African culture and Rev. Kumalo is trying to embrass that. This is also the reason that he traveled to Johannesberg, he went to help his sister get healthy, but he was also there to look for his son and brother and essentially bring them back homewith him.

How can you not think about someone who got hit by a bus?

Because he reminds him of his own son and believes if he can help it will make him feel better.

Kumola keeps thinking of Mpanza's son because he is worried that Absalom is going to have the same fate. Mpanza's mother watched her son get hit by a bus and she lost him. Kumola is begining to loose his son.

Kumola keeps reflecing on Mpanza's son because he is afraid he will lose his son, if not by death, then by them losing connection and never finding eachother. Or that his son will not want to keep the connection between them.

Kumalo understands how Mpanza feels and the relationship between father and son. Also he knows the importance of the bond of the family and village.

I agree with Emily and Melissa; the reason Kumola keeps thinking about Mpanza's son is that he feels as if he is loosing his own son, just as Mpanza lost hers. Also, Kumola keeps thinking about Mpanza's son because the story reflects some of his fears about Johannesberg, and how different city life is from the tribal life Kumalo is used to.

airam said...

i agree with lydia that Kumalo understands how Mpanza feels about the relationship between father and son and that Kumalo is trying to reunite his family.

Val said...

Kumalo proceeds to think about Mpanza's son because Kumalo is in his own situation where he starts to believe that he maybe lost his own son. Through Kumalos thoughts of Mpanza's son, the story allows you to see the differences between city life and tribal life.
