I think that by having the story told from a black person's point of view it shows the struggles that some of them are forced to go through but at the same time the privalages they are given and the respect that they recieve. At the time the story is told they are dealing with the Apartheid, which deals with racial seperation and disagreements. One way people were brought together was through the church, lead by the priests.
